Stuart Duncan, Dentist Glasgow
Stuart started dental school in 2007, and wasn’t initially as obsessed with dentistry as he is now. During his first few years at university, he spent much of his time finding other ways to challenge himself. He volunteered for four years as a Special Constable with Strathclyde Police and continued the wedding photography business he’d started at high school.
However, by the time Stuart graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2012 his view of dentistry had changed considerably. He had discovered the parts of the profession that genuinely interested him: helping anxious patients; caring for adults with additional support needs; and oral surgery. Since then, he has actively sought out opportunities to develop his skills in each of these areas.
Following graduation, Stuart completed his Vocational Training year at Canmore Dental Practice in Dunfermline. Working alongside two supportive trainers and a large, experienced team confirmed that he had made the right career choice. It also gave him an opportunity to work closely with dentists who shared his interests in community care and oral surgery.
After a short period in Edinburgh, Stuart moved to Carlisle. There he began to focus increasingly on complex oral surgery and managing anxious patients. He spent much of his spare time undertaking further training, attending courses and learning from other dentists. He also took on additional responsibilities, eventually becoming Clinical Support Manager for the Cumbria area with MyDentist.
Condensing his practice time into reduced days allowed him to began working in the Community Dental Service. This was initially intended as a short period to expand his experience. It has instead continued for well over a decade, and has become one of the most important parts of his career. Stuart loves the Community Dental Service and its patients. That love will likely keep him from ever fully leaving this role. Working in the CDS, Stuart has had the privilege of working closely with exceptional dental specialists and many highly experienced colleagues, treating patients and cases that would rarely be encountered in a typical general dental practice.
This has included complex extractions, treatment under intravenous sedation and general anaesthesia; adults with significant additional support needs; and patients presenting with severe dental infections and extensive swellings.
Working in this environment also cemented Stuart’s belief that good dentistry is about a lot of things in addition to technical ability. Two colleagues in particular, Simon and Alison, had a profound influence on him. Their focus on treating every patient with patience, respect and genuine love was nothing short of infectious. Their approach continues to inspire the way Stuart works today.
Teaching has also become an important part of Stuart’s career. He spent a year as a clinical tutor for dental students at UCLan and later supervised vocational training for a wonderful young dentist in general practice. Both experiences reinforced his enjoyment of helping other dentists develop their skills and working collaboratively with colleagues.
In recent years, other dentists have increasingly referred to Stuart for complex and difficult extractions and the management of anxious patients.
From the end of the summer 2026, Stuart will be moving away from his previous practice in MyDentist Crown retail park. Instead he will be working at Broadwood Dental in Cumbernauld, where he will carry out referrals for complex extractions and intravenous sedation; and at Burnside Dental Care, where he will provide general dental care for NHS patients along with accepting oral surgery referrals.
For Stuart, the most rewarding part of dentistry remains helping patients who may find dental treatment particularly difficult – whether because they are anxious, have complex needs, or require more challenging treatment. He is fortunate to work alongside teams who share his commitment to providing careful, thoughtful and high-quality care.
